阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项选出最佳选项。

A

The return of the road trip

People are eager to get out of their houses, but not badly enough to get on a plane. The solution? A good old-fashioned road trip. As many states make travel rules less strict, they’re encouraging people to move around within their home state to help increase local business. A road trip in one’s vehicle allows for a sense of control and you know whose germs (细细菌) are in your space.

The prioritization (优优先) of cleanliness

Travelers generally expect a clean hotel room when they arrive, and now expectations will be higher than ever. We’re about to become concerned with cleanliness to the point that it could become the top priority of hotels, more so than comfortable beds and good service.

Checking list can show whether hosts are practicing strict new clean guidelines, including a 24-hour waiting period between bookings.

The new appeal of nature

Travelers will be rightly nervous about crowds and anxious to avoid them. That will result in an explosion of visitors to national parks and other places where crowds are less likely to be met with. This could be the start of the golden age of camping, as people want to get outside while keeping social distance.

___________________

Health is at the forefront of everyone’s minds these days, and it is safe to say it’ll stay therefore a longtime yet. Meanwhile, people are sick of being indoors, so tourism is likely to reflect an increasing desire to promote good health while getting outside. Intrepid Travel’s CEO James told The Times, “If 2020 proves to be a year we spend a lot of time indoors, 2021 will be about getting outdoors and getting active, with tours centred around things like cycling and hiking.”

21. Taking a road trip is encouraged to ___________________.

A. replace a tiring journey by air B. prevent germs from spreading

C. improve drivers’ control of the vehicle D. promote local economic development

22. What can we learn from the passage?

A. Hotels should put comfort in the first place.B. Travelers should book a room 24 hours ahead.

C. Camping is a good choice to avoid crowds.D. People tend to get sick after staying long indoors.

23. What is the best title for Paragraph 5?

A. The rise of health tourism B. The routine of keeping fit

C. The benefit of getting active D. The importance of health care

B

BEING an astronaut sounds cool, doesn’t it? In space, they get to do some pretty amazing things, like floating in zero gravity (重力).

However, there are also plenty of things that astronauts can’t do because of their weightless environment, and that’s very sad. What’s worse, they can’t even let their sadness show ---- because it’s impossible to cry in zero gravity.

Of course, astronauts can still produce tears. But crying is much more difficult in space, reported The Atlantic in January. Without gravity, tears don’t flow downward out of the eyes like they do here on Earth. This means that when you cry in space, your tears have nowhere to go ---- they just stick to your eyes.

In May 2011, astronaut Andrew Feustel experienced this during one of his spacewalks. “Tears,” he said, “don’t fall off of your eye...They just kind of stay there.”

Besides making your vision unclear, this can also cause physical pain. Back on Earth, tears are supposed to bring comfort to the eyes. But that’s not the case in space. The space environment dries out astronauts’ eyes, and when tears suddenly wet the eyes, it can cause pain rather than comfort.” My right eye is painful like crazy.” Feustel told his teammate during the walk.

Since gravity doesn’t work in space, astronauts need some extra help to get rid of the tears. Feustel chose to rub his eyes against his helmet to wipe the tears away. Another choice is to just wait ---- “When the tears get big enough, they simply break free of the eye and float around,” astronaut Ron Parise told The Atlantic.

There are lots of small things ---- things like crying ---- that we are so used to on Earth. We usually take them for granted, until they become a problem in a totally different environment, like space. There, astronauts can’t talk to each other directly. They also can’t eat or drink in normal ways. They can’t even burp (打嗝), because there is no gravity to hold the food down in their stomach. If they do burp, they just end up throwing up (呕吐) everything in their stomach, according to the UK National Space Center.

Thus, perhaps it’s only space explorers who can honestly say: “Gravity, you’re the best.”

24. From Paragraphs 2 and 3, we can know that ___________________.

A. astronauts are unable to feel sad in space  B. astronauts produce fewer tears in space

C. tears produced in space don’t flow downward  D. tears produced in space flow down more slowly

25. What effect do tears have on astronauts?

A. They cause physical pain.  B. They bring comfort to them.

C. They make their vision clearer.  D. They float around and cause trouble.

26. What can the astronaut do to get rid of the tears?

A. Rub his eyes against his helmet to let the tears float forward.

B. Get the tears big enough to break away from his eyes.

C. Get the tears big enough to fall off of his eyes.

D. Rub his eyes by hand to let the tears float around.

27. What’s the second-to-last paragraph mainly about?

A. Suggestions on how astronauts can stay comfortable in space.

B. Things that humans can’t do without gravity.

C. Why burping is impossible in space.

D. Other basic things that are difficult to do in space.

C

I first began experiencing worry and depression at the age of 14, after being bullied (欺凌) at school for years. While at first worry and happiness would come and go, it finally became a constant part of my life.

I wanted so much to find a good way to overcome (克服) my worry and unhappiness that I tried everything; special teas, yoga, anything I read about in books, and advice given by doctors. However hard I had tried, I still felt that I hadn’t even come close to dealing with the problem.

But one afternoon, my eyes fell upon an article in a magazine. I was reading that talked about how dogs were able to help people with worry and unhappiness. The very next day, I decided to get a dog ---- a corgi (柯基犬).

When I brought my little corgi, Buddy, home, I didn’t realize how much he would change my life. It didn’t happen right away, however.

Once the “puppy excitement” went away, my worry and unhappiness came back as usual. One morning, I woke up with those familiar feelings again. I didn’t want to get out of bed, I turned to pull the covers back over my head and give up. That’s when I saw Buddy.

Buddy started jumping all over me, licking my face, letting me know that it was time to go outside. It seemed that he was saying, “There’s no time to be sad, the world is amazing!” And for the first time in my life, on a day when my worry and unhappiness were strong, I got out of bed. I put on my winter clothes and went for a walk in the snow with my new friend. I realized at that moment, walking down the street in winter, my life was changing. I really was a new person. This was my new beginning, my missing puzzle (拼图) piece.

It’s been more than a year since that day and I’ve never spent another morning unable to get out of bed and I’ve not cried myself to sleep or spent my days filled with fear and regret. Sure, I still have days when I feel sad or worried, but with Buddy by my side, I’ve finally learned how to deal with these feelings and emotions.

28. According to the first two paragraphs, the author ___________________.

A. has been a school bully for years

B. suffered from worry and unhappiness in the age of 4

C. felt less sad after taking doing yoga, reading books and so on

D. tried many ways to fight worry and unhappiness but nothing worked

29. When the author felt worried again, ___________________

A. She played games at home with buddy. B. She spent the whole day sleeping in bed.

C. She went out to drink with some friends. D. Buddy helped her out of the bad feelings.

30. How does the author feel in the last paragraph?

A. Hopeful              B. Worried       C. Confused        D. Disappointed

31. The author wrote this passage mainly to ___________________.

A. Stress (强调) the danger of worry and unhappiness

B. explain that it is helpful to keep a dog

C. suggest different ways to deal with bad feelings

D. show how her dog helped her to fight worry and unhappiness

New evidence suggests that studying Chinese and learning to write Chinese characters may train cognitive (认知的) abilities, which are not developed by learning other languages and writing systems.

A study conducted by researchers from the UK’s Wellcome Trust found that people who speak Chinese use both temporal lobes (颞叶) of their brain to understand the language. This is very different from English-language speakers who use only the left temporal lobe. Speakers of Chinese use intonation (语调) to tell between completely different meanings of particular words, which needs stronger cognitive abilities.

Besides, the practice of handwriting, especially of Chinese characters, will aid the development of motor skills, learning shapes and letters and will keep the mind sharp. Through the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, researchers found that neural (神经的) activity in children who practiced printing letters by hand was more strengthened than those who just looked at them. Compared with English, mostly written in line and from left to right, Chinese characters have more complex structure (复杂的结构). Their writing involves strokes (笔画) in all four directions: up-down, left, and right. The movement of the fingers and hand helps improve neural activity in the working, thinking, and memory of the brain of the learners.

Evidence also suggests that there is a connection between the learning of Chinese and math skills. Researchers from New Zealand noticed that Asian children educated in their own languages appear to have gained a greater understanding of math ideas than English-speaking children. During the natural learning process of Chinese, the student is learning basic math ideas. Math skills are included in character writing because it includes skills such as counting, grouping, ordering, and identifying similarities and differences.

While the research on the relationship between the learning of Chinese and cognition is not yet fully clear, there is good evidence to suggest that learning Chinese tones and characters represents an added challenge to language learning.

32. What is the text centred on?
       A. Why Asian children are better at the math test.  B. Why Chinese is a difficult language to learn.
        C. How learning Chinese benefits our cognition.  D. How Chinese writing differs from English writing.
33. What does the study by UK’s Wellcome Trust show?
        A. English speakers should learn Chinese.          B. Chinese has more intonations than English.
        C. Using Chinese needs a higher-level brain activity.  D. Mastering different meanings of Chinese is difficult.
34. Why is learning Chinese beneficial to solving math problems?
        A. They need quite different cognitive abilities. B. Chinese writing looks like math symbols.
        C. Chinese children naturally do well in math.   D. They share several key cognitive abilities.
35. How is the text mainly developed?
        A. By offering supporting findings.               B. By comparing former research.
        C. By discussing problems and solutions.      D. By listing advantages and disadvantages.

第二节(满分25分)

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Eva spent the first week of high school trying to keep her head above water. One of the major headaches for her was finding her way in the huge school building. It was a six-floor building. On each floor, hallways (走廊) Stretched in four directions, leading to classrooms, laboratories, and teachers’ offices. Somewhere in the building, there was also a library, a cafeteria, and a gym.

Having a poor sense of direction, Eva found it impossible to get around in such a huge building. All the different hallways and rooms were too much to think about, let alone learn by heart. She decided that she would memorize (记住) where her classes were and then pretend that the rest of the place didn’t exist.

In her fast P.E. class, Eva was shocked when Coach Pitt announced that everyone had to run one mile around the track outside. She searched the faces of her classmates for signs of panic. There was nothing she feared more than having to run a whole mile. To Eva, “a mile” was used to describe long distances. It was ten miles from her home to her grandfather’s, and that always seemed like a long way, even in a car!

When Coach Pitt blew his whistle (哨子), Eva figured she would be left far behind. However, while some of her classmates edged ahead, others actually fell behind. “It’s just the beginning,” she thought, “I’ll come in last for Sure.”

Soon Eva began to breathe hard, with her heart pounding and legs shaking. Feeling frantic, Eva started using a mind trick on herself. She stopped thinking about the word “mile” Instead, she focused on reaching the shadow cast on the track by an oak tree up ahead. Then she concentrated on jogging to the spot where the track curved (拐弯). After that, she tried to see if she could complete her first lap (一圈). One lap turned into two, then three, then four.

注意:

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Paragraph 1:

When Coach Pitt said “Nice work!” to her at the finish line, Eva was surprised. _______

第一节:(参考范文)

A healthy parent-child relationship is built on mutual understanding and respect. Here are three key suggestions to help strengthen this bond.

First, try treating each other as equals. Parents and children should respect each other’s thoughts and feelings, rather than simply following authority. Second, be a good listener. When your children speak, give them your full attention without quick judgment. Similarly, children should listen carefully when parents share their experiences and concerns. Third, communicate regularly. Open conversations about daily life, challenges, and hopes can help both sides understand each other better.

By being equal, listening patiently, and talking openly, families can create a warmer and more trusting relationship

第二节:(参考范文)

Paragraph 1:

When Coach Pitt said “Nice work!” to her at the finish line, Eva was surprised. She looked around and realized she wasn’t last ---- several classmates were still struggling on the track. A warm feeling spread through her chest, mixing with her heavy breaths. For the first time, she understood that a huge challenge could be broken into small, manageable steps. The fear of the “mile” had disappeared the moment she focused only on the next shadow, the next curve, the next lap. Walking back to the school building, Eva felt lighter, not just in her legs, but in her mind. Maybe she didn’t have to be defeated by things that seemed too big or too far.

Paragraph 2:

Eva decided to use the same trick to deal with the school building. The next morning, instead of feeling lost in the six-floor maze, she told herself to just find her first classroom. Then, after class, she aimed only for the stairway near it. Step by step, she added one new location each day ---- the cafeteria on Tuesday, the library on Wednesday. She drew simple mental maps, connecting places like links in a chain. By the end of the month, the hallways no longer felt like a puzzle. She even began helping other freshmen find their way.
