Urban Narrative: A New Living Room "Upon the Sea"

在上海最负盛名的南京东路步行街核心区，由西班牙Benedetta Tagliabue –EMBT事务所与同济大学建筑设计研究院（集团）有限公司合作设计的世纪广场更新项目现已正式落成。世纪广场位于上海最具标志性的南京路步行街的核心地带，被重新构想为一个充满活力、生态、互动的城市空间。世纪广场历来与表演和活动紧密相连，坐落于人民广场与外滩之间的战略连接点，以其非凡的夜景灯光和商业展示而著称。

设计灵感源自上海一词的起源——“海上”（意为“在海之上”）。设计通过“贝壳张开，露出珍珠”的隐喻致敬这一起源：一个中央万花筒结构像水面一样，反射并重新框取城市景观。整个广场宛如一枚张开的贝壳，展示着其璀璨的明珠：一座闪耀的万花筒，映照着焕新的绿色城市风景。

In the heart of Shanghai's most iconic pedestrian corridor, East Nanjing Road, the renewal of Century Square byBenedetta Tagliabue –EMBT in collaboration with Tongji University Architectural Design and Research Institute (Group) Co., Ltd. has reached completion. Century Square, located in the heart of East Nanjing Road, Shanghai's most iconic pedestrian street, is reimagined as a vibrant, ecological, and interactive urban space. Century Square has always been related to shows and events, positioned in a strategic connection between People's Square and The Bund, and characterized by its special ambience of incredible night lights and commercial presentations.

The design takes inspiration from the origin of the word Shanghai, which means "upon the sea." The design pays homage to this origin through the metaphor of a shell opening to reveal a pearl: a central kaleidoscope structure that reflects and reframes the cityscape like the surface of water. Century Square opens like a shell to reveal the splendour of its "pearl": a shining kaleidoscope that reflects the new green urban scenery.

核心装置：城市万花筒，生态新地标

The Centerpiece: An Urban Kaleidoscope, An Ecological Landmark

全新的万花筒建筑是世纪广场的新心脏，是它的“明珠”。其立面如水面般波光灵动，分解并重组着周围的光线与图像—五彩的铺装与绿植、商业广告与历史建筑，统统融入其中，在其永恒的运动中重新组合成新的画面。它不仅承载着精彩的表演，建筑本身就是一场演出。

The new kaleidoscope building is the new heart of Century Square, its "pearl." Its facades reflect like a water surface, fragmenting and recomposing the lights and images of the surroundings: its colourful paving and greenery, its commercials and historical buildings. It hosts spectacular shows, and it is a show in itself.

万花筒的外表皮采用镜面不锈钢幕墙，面积约1000 平方米，由191 块壁板精密拼接而成，通过微米级激光焊接工艺实现无缝镜面效果。这一技术确保了反射图像的连续性与纯净度，使建筑宛如一块完整的"城市之镜"。在万花筒内部，一些小空间邀请公众在植物与镜面之间，发现广场、天空和这座城市的精神。

The exterior skin of the Kaleidoscope is made of mirrored stainless steel panels, totaling approximately 1,000 square meters and composed of 191 precision-fabricated pieces. Micron-level laser welding technology achieves a seamless mirror finish, ensuring the continuity and purity of the reflected image and transforming the building into a monolithic "urban mirror." Inside the kaleidoscope, small rooms invite the public to discover the square, the sky, and the spirit of the city, in between plants and mirrors.

生态策略：绿色的城市舞台

Ecological Strategy: A Green Urban Stage

项目秉持生态优先的策略，对城市中心进行“再自然化”，引入绿色空间、改善城市微气候。更新后的世纪广场告别了以往单一的硬质铺装，引入了大量的绿色植被、遮阳屋顶和防雨设施。场地内整合了带有遮阳顶棚、防雨设施和植被的绿色坡地，在公共空间与周围高层建筑之间提供缓冲。

In consideration of ecological consciousness, the project prioritizes reintroducing nature to the city centre, introducing green spaces and improving the urban micro-climate. The renewed Century Square moves away from its previous hard-surfaced nature, introducing substantial green areas, shadow roof, and rain protection. Integrated within the site are green grades with shadow roofs, rain protection, and vegetation that provide a buffer between the public space and surrounding high-rise buildings.

世纪广场的南侧通过一个地形元素来组织：绿色的山丘，与现有树木交织在一起，支撑着一个可用于多种方式的木质看台。绿色露台和台阶让人们可以坐在不同高度的树荫之中，俯瞰广场的生机与活力。

The south side of Century Square is organized by a topographic element: green hills, interwoven with the existing trees, supporting a wooden grandstand that can be used in multiple ways. Green terraces and steps allow people to sit at different levels, surrounded by trees and leaves, overlooking the vitality of the square.

地面的铺装图案唤起了海底世界的意象。广场铺地面积约4100 平方米，由34518块小砖拼贴而成。中国美术学院团队在数百种蓝色调中筛选出12种基色，通过菱形砖与三角砖的组合，营造出粼粼如水的视觉效果。入夜后，集成灯光系统将地面转化为一片闪烁的场域，提供沉浸式灯光体验，转变为一种发光的、致敬海洋的景象。夜晚的南京东路世纪广场变成色彩的游戏，通过广场唤醒人们对于大海的记忆。

Underfoot, the new paving pattern evokes an undersea world. The pavement covers approximately 4,100 square meters, composed of 34,518 small bricks. The China Academy of Art team selected 12 base colours from hundreds of blue tones, using diamond-shaped and triangular bricks to create a shimmering, water-like effect. By night, integrated lighting transforms the ground into a glittering field, offering an immersive lighting experience that transforms into a glowing homage to the sea. The night scene converts Century Square into a game of colours and a reminiscence of the sea.

灵活功能：连接过去与未来的城市客厅

Flexible Programming: 

An Urban Living Room Linking Past and Future

世纪广场作为连接人民广场与外滩历史街区的关键纽带，其设计充分考虑了功能的灵活性。广场成为一个绿色、灵活的公共生活舞台，提供活动区、展览区、公共座椅。广场将举办各种规模的活动：新品首秀、展览、商业和文化活动，同时也承担起“城市客厅”的功能，提升南京东路的吸引力。

Acting as a strategic hinge between People's Square and The Bund, the design of Century Square prioritizes flexibility. The square becomes a green, flexible stage for public life: offering event zones, exhibition areas, public seating. The square will host many events at different scales: product presentations, exhibitions, markets, cultural and theatre events, adapting the scenario each time, while also taking on the role of an "urban living room," raising the attraction of East Nanjing Road.

南京路上的立面通过承载灯光和屏幕来参与其中，重新描绘出美丽的轮廓。更新后的世纪广场将成为南京东路的璀璨焦点，一个体验上海自然之美的新场所。它旨在容纳大型活动、日常公共生活和休憩时刻，成为城市中一个新的文化与生态地标。

The facades on Nanjing Road participate by hosting lights and screens, beautifully redefining the streetscape. The renewed Century Square will become the highlight of East Nanjing Road, a new venue to experience the natural beauty of Shanghai. Designed to host large events, daily public life, and moments of rest, Century Square emerges as a new cultural and ecological landmark for the city.

通过对气候的精准回应，世纪广场为游客提供一个舒适的生活环境。它提供遮荫区、避雨屋顶、为炎炎夏日提供冷却元素，为寒冷冬季提供室内空间。设计方案不仅保留了广场的表演性特质，更实现了向更具气候意识和社会责任感的方向转变。

Through its climatic measurements, Century Square provides a comfortableenvironment for visitors. It offers a shadow zone, a rain roof, cooling elements for hot summers and interior spaces for cold winters. The design maintains the performative identity of the square while achieving a shift toward a more climate-conscious and socially responsible future.
