Carbonate and fractured reservoirs hold significant global hydrocarbon reserves, yet their characterization and modelling remain challenging due to geological complexity and scale discrepancies. This presentation provides a 35-year career perspective on fracture characterization and modelling, drawing from extensive experience across Shell, PDO, and independent consultancy. Dr. Richard will cover key topics including sandbox analogue modelling, integrated iterative fracture modelling workflows, and the importance of multi-scale data integration—from seismic and borehole images to core and outcrop studies. He will address the "scale discrepancy paradox" between geological observation and subsurface models, and discuss practical approaches including Discrete Fracture Networks (DFN), straight-to-cell methods, and dynamic calibration using pressure transient analysis. The talk will also highlight the application of virtual reality and next-generation field trips for improved geological understanding.
